ER Visit

Well this week has been a bit overwhelming and today made it even more so. Tristan has had a headache for about the past four days. Today he woke up crying for the fourth day and it just did not feel right to me. I had tried everything oils, cool wash clothes, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, you name it. Today I called the Doctor. They were going to see Tristan this morning but Tristan said he was feeling better and wanted to go to school. I called the Doctor back and made an appointment for this afternoon. As I walked Tristan to school he said he felt a bit sick. I said that if he felt sick he needed to come home with me. Then as we stood at the edge of the school yard he pointed at the school indicating to me that was were we were headed. I reluctantly agreed.

I watched Tristan play on the play ground until the bell rang and then he lined up for class. I then headed to the office to let the nurse know what was up and that I would have my phone with me. I made it through the most of the day but then received a call about 2 pm.

I headed to the school to pick Tristan up and there he was sitting in the nurses office, back pack on waiting for me to pick him up. He instantly started crying. I signed him out and we were off. Driving home he seemed fine. We came and chilled out for about 30 minutes before I had a meeting. Tex came home for the meeting and about 45 minutes in I heard Tristan start to cry. This was one of those cries that you just know something is wrong and you can not do anything about. My heart has been breaking all week.

It was about time to head to the doctor anyway so I wrapped up my meeting and we were off. Tristan cried most of the way to the doctor until he fell asleep. His normal doctor was on vacation but Dr Pederman has seen him before and I really like him as well. As I woke Tristan up the crying began again. Dr Pederman agreed that this cry and these actions were "not normal". He suggested I take him to St Luke's E R for an MRI or a CT scan. His exact word were "it is either something or it is nothing". And we were off again.

I loaded Tristan up in the truck and called Tex as well as my mom to let them know where we were going. When We arrived at St Luke's Tristan had fallen asleep again. They got us in a room rather quickly. When the Doctor came in Tristan was again asleep and he had me wake him up. Again Tristan was crying pretty hysterically pointing at his head and pounding his fists. The doctor here also agreed that this was not normal. They wanted to put an IV in to give him some pain medicine and draw some blood. I immediately new this was not a good idea.

A nurse came in to "demonstrate" to Tristan what they were going to do. They showed hm the IV procedure with a little doll in a Superman Bag. The minute the syringe came out he was done. After 5 years worth of shots and a previous bad blood draw from the allergy test I was worried and I had every reason to be.

The nurses briefly left then they came back in force. 3 of them. Tristan began to go hysterical... no really, screaming, kicking. It took all three nurses, Tex and I to hold him down. He was yelling at me and calling for Grandma. My heart was broken. Finally after the second attempt the got the IV in.  Tristan began to calm down but me, on the other hand, I finally broke. It was horrible.

While waiting for the blood results, there was a knock on the door. For those of you who know Tristan this is quit entertaining. The door slightly opens and on the other side of the door was a man announcing "you have a visitor", Then we see a woman with a very large Dalmatian dog. Yep, really. Which I know this is a great thing for 90% of the public but when you r kid is petrified of dogs it is not that great of an idea.  Luckily we declined before they made it into the room and Tristan was out of it enough he didn't really react.

Once the doctor came in he informed us that the blood test were clear and after a brief discussion we decided on the CT scan to make sure there were no "masses". Holly crap I don't know how parents do this. Tristan and I headed in for the CT scan and Tristan was a trooper. After another ER wait the doctor came in and informed us that the CT scan was clear. My heart felt relief on one hand and worry on the other.

The doctors sent us home with a Popsicle and some ibuprofen and we are to follow up with his doctor next week. Blessed on one hand and still worried on the other.
